Macro style photography demands a steady hand, a tripod or a little help from a strobe.

I use a Nikon 105 m.m. 2.8 VR at ISO 50 and aperture down to at least f32, with the SB 900 flash synced up to 1/250 and diffused with the Nikon dome so +2 stops. It works well but often results in the flash cut off giving a black background.  Depth of field is not always sufficient to ensure full image sharpness but that is a matter of personal choice .
